A concrete slab should be level in order to support the structure that rests on it. If the slab has cracked and sunk, it is not supporting the resting structure properly. In most instances where there is a structure, complete removal of the concrete is not possible or at least affordable. The part of the slab that has sunk can be raised back up by injecting a supporting compound underneath.
Slab-jacking is a way to lift and support the sunken section of concrete so the entire concrete slab is level and properly supports any resting structures. The process is also commonly referred to as mudjacking and pressure grouting. The process of slabjacking usually starts with drilling a series of equally spaced holes in the existing concrete slab that needs lifting. Material is injected into the holes to fill any voids, compress the soil, and raise the slab to level. There are two main types of material used for slab jacking. The first is a cementious or mortar type material that is essentially concrete without the rocks. The second is structural expanding foam.
The structural foam is a closed cell polymer expanding foam that is injected into the previously drilled holes. The two-part polymer is injected at a higher PSI than the mud grout, but the pressure it not what causes the concrete to lift. The expansion of the air bubbles in the polymer is what lifts the concrete slab. The material that is injected first fills the voids in the soil below, and begins to compress the underlying soil. After the foam has nowhere else to expand below, it begins lifting the slab. The careful attention of the contractor ensures that the slab is lifted the exact correct amount. Use of both a level and a laser transit help the contrator ensure that the slab is being levelled out properly.
